At the top of the flowchart is Properties of Matter. Properties of Matter is broken into two subcategories:

1. Chemical Property - property that becomes evident during a chemical reaction (example: flammable or reactive)

2. Physical Property - property that can be measured or observed without changing the chemical composition of the substance

Physical Property is further broken down into two additional subcategories:

a. Extensive - cannot be used to help identify a substance because it changes (example: mass or volume)

b. Intensive - can be used to help identify a substance because it does not change with the amount of mater present (example: color or melting point)
